Margarita is known as the Pearl of the Caribbean, and its beaches are the reason most visitors come. Each one has its own character — some lively, some quiet, some made for sport — so it's worth choosing the right beach for the day you have in mind.
Playa El Agua is the island's most famous beach: a long stretch of golden sand on the north-east coast, lined with coconut palms, restaurants and beach bars. The sea is open Caribbean and the waves can be strong, so swim where the locals do and watch the flags.
Just next door, Playa Parguito is where Margarita surfs. The waves are bigger, the crowd is younger and the atmosphere is energetic — great for watching the action from a lounger even if you don't ride a board yourself.
On the south coast, Playa El Yaque is famous around the world for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Steady trade winds blow across a wide bay of shallow, calm water, and there are schools for every level. It's also close to the airport — an easy last stop before a flight.
For something calmer, head west to Juan Griego, a fishing town on a sheltered bay known for its sunsets, or to La Restinga National Park, where boats wind through mangrove channels to a long, wild beach.
Whichever you choose, bring sunscreen, a hat and plenty of water — the Caribbean sun is strong even on cloudy days.
