Getting to and Around Margarita Island

October 15, 2026 Mil Soles

Margarita Island lies in the Caribbean off the north-east coast of Venezuela, in the state of Nueva Esparta. Getting there and getting around is easier than many first-time visitors expect — here's what to know.

By air. Most visitors arrive at the island's international airport, Santiago Mariño, on the south side of Margarita near El Yaque. Flight routes and schedules change, so check with your airline for the latest connections.

By sea. Ferries connect Margarita with the Venezuelan mainland, arriving at the port of Punta de Piedras on the island's west side. It's a popular option for travellers coming from within Venezuela, especially with a car.

Getting around. Taxis are widely available, and car rental is an option if you're comfortable driving. Distances on the island are short, but the main sights are spread across different coasts, so plan your days by area — beaches on the north-east, history in Pampatar and La Asunción, sunsets in the west.

Agree on fares first. If you take a taxi, confirm the price before you set off — it avoids surprises at the end of the ride.

Let us handle it. At Mil Soles we arrange airport-to-inn and inn-to-airport transfers, as well as rides to the beaches and shopping malls. Send us your flight details and we'll have your ride ready when you land.
