Margarita's beaches get most of the attention, but the island has much more to offer. Here are some of our favourite ways to spend a day away from the sand.
Visit the colonial forts. The Spanish built several fortresses on Margarita, and some of the best known can still be visited: the Castillo de San Carlos Borromeo on the bay in Pampatar, the Castillo de Santa Rosa in La Asunción, the island's historic capital, and the small Fortín de La Galera on the hill above Juan Griego.
Take a boat through the mangroves. In La Restinga National Park, local boatmen guide visitors through narrow channels under arches of mangroves, where you can spot seabirds and see oysters growing on the roots. The ride ends at a long, natural beach facing the open sea.
Watch the sun go down in Juan Griego. The town faces west across its bay, and the view from the Fortín de La Galera at sunset is one of the classic Margarita moments.
Eat fresh seafood. Fishing is part of island life, and the restaurants along the waterfronts serve fish and seafood straight from the boats. Ask the locals what came in that day.
Learn to windsurf or kitesurf. The steady winds and shallow water at El Yaque make it one of the best places in the Caribbean to try — schools on the beach offer lessons for complete beginners.
Go shopping. Margarita has long been known in Venezuela as a place to shop, with busy shopping streets in Porlamar and large malls on the east side of the island.
We're happy to help you plan any of these outings during breakfast, and to arrange the transfers to get you there and back.
